If the Super Bowl winner was determined by the Madden Challenge at Buffalo Wild Wings in Duluth early Tuesday morning, then Green Bay would repeat as world champions.

The funny thing is, the Packers would have to beat themselves.

Spencer Saltzman took top honors when he decided to go for the two-point conversion with just nine seconds left to go in the game. The conversion pass from Aaron Rodgers hit a receiver in the back of the end zone and he won 11-10. His opponent also was playing the Green Bay team.

Saltzman could have played it safe and kicked the extra point and send the game into overtime. But past 1 a.m., he decided to end the game right there.

“It was getting late so I decided to go for the win,” he said.

Saltzman trailed 10-0 in the first half, but kicked a field goal right before halftime. A late fourth quarter interception appeared to end his chances at the title, but a fumble on the same play allowed him to keep the ball and drive the field for the touchdown.

Wearing a Charles Woodson Packer jersey, Saltzman was the champion of the 32-player tournament for the release of the popular video game Madden 2012. The NFL game was released on Tuesday for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. For winning the tourney he received a free copy of the game, which retails for $60.

This is the second year that Buffalo Wild Wings has held this event for the Madden release. To start the evening there were up to four games going on with Xbox 360s hooked up to TVs at the restaurant.

GameStop in Duluth pre-sold the games for people to pick up at midnight. The video game retailer also supplied the Xboxes and organized the tournament.

Buffalo Wild Wings Manager Chad Baker said it has been a popular event and a chance for gamers to have some fun before the midnight release. Instead of waiting in your car for midnight to arrive, those looking to buy the game could enjoy food and drink specials and try their luck against other gamers.

Many of the players picked the Eagles, Jets and the Packers this year. Baker said the Vikings were popular last season after going to the NFC title game. This time around there were fewer guys willing to play the Minnesota squad.

Developers of the video game spend a great deal of time updating rosters and ratings of the individual players before the game is release. Those with online access also are able to downloaded updated rosters from the real NFL rosters during the football season.

The game is named after John Madden, a hall of fame football coach and broadcaster. It was first released by Electronic Arts in 1988 and has been released annually since 1990.

Baker said this is one of several midnight video game releases that are in the works this year at Buffalo Wild Wings. Several big games are coming out this fall, include Gears of War and Call of Duty Modern Warfare. While they will not have tournaments like they did for Madden, he said other ideas are in the works for those nights, including trivia contests.
